Many of us experience itchier, flakier, and uncomfortably dry skin as the colder months roll in. Chilly weather, diminished sunlight, and dry indoor air can have significant effects on our skin health. Here are some effective strategies to keep your skin happy and nourished this winter, going beyond just slathering on lotion!

For many, winter brings a chill that can be harsh on our skin. If you’re located in colder regions, like the Arctic Circle, you face even more intense conditions. The cold air outside combined with heated indoor environments strips moisture from your skin. Additionally, the reduction in sunlight means lower vitamin D levels, leading to a compromised skin barrier and dehydration.

Understanding Winter Skincare

Utilizing moisturizing skincare products to restore hydration to the upper layers of your skin is essential. It’s also beneficial to apply thicker creams and lotions that provide a protective layer against the elements. With winter comes less sunlight, limiting our skin’s ability to produce vitamin D, which is vital for maintaining skin health.

When vitamin D levels decrease, there is a higher risk of inflammation due to immune responses. Low vitamin D can worsen skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

As dry air and frigid temperatures prevail, our skin barrier becomes less effective, making us more susceptible to damage. Keratinocytes, which comprise 90% of the outer layer of our skin, secrete pro-inflammatory substances that heighten skin sensitivity. This is why your usual skincare routine may not suffice as the colder weather sets in.

Contrast therapy, involving alternating exposure to hot and cold, is another strategy. Many traditional cultures and athletes practice this method to improve their skin’s adaptability to temperature swings.

Adding humidity to your home through the use of a humidifier helps restore moisture to your skin. Indoor heating typically reduces humidity levels, pulling moisture from the air and subsequently from your skin, leading to further dehydration.

This drop contributes to tight, dry skin that’s more prone to damage, and you may notice premature lines and wrinkles as a result. No one wants that!
