How a Tech-Savvy Mom Harnesses ChatGPT for Stellar Holiday Shopping

The holiday season means a whirlwind of shopping, decorating, and plenty of behind-the-scenes magic, especially for parents. This year, many of us are embracing technology to simplify the chaos that comes with gift-buying and seasonal planning, myself included.

This season has seen me rely on AI tools like ChatGPT to help me explore holiday decor trends, delicious festive recipes, and engaging activities for my children.

Perhaps the most remarkable benefit? AI is transforming my holiday gift shopping process. With its help, I can curate personalized gift lists, find great deals, and even place calls to nearby stores for me.

I’m not alone in this; many parents are tapping into AI’s capabilities. According to Lilian Rincon, the VP of consumer shopping product at Google, 42% of holiday shoppers in the U.S. are planning to utilize AI tools more than they ever have.

“People cherish those delightful shopping experiences but want to cut down on tedious tasks,” she explains. “That’s where AI can shine.”

Jonathan Jaklitsch, the founder and CEO of GiftList, shares the sentiment. “For many parents, the holidays involve juggling ideas, logistics, and budget. AI and various applications can assist with all three,” he states.

If you’re like most parents seeking extra support this year, explore how AI can enhance your holiday experience.

How AI Is Enhancing Holiday Shopping for Parents

While AI isn’t capable of getting my kids to sleep on Christmas Eve or encouraging them to eat their vegetables, it can significantly reduce the stress of shopping during this bustling season.

Jaklitsch notes, “With the mainstream rise of tools like ChatGPT and coverage in parenting media, parents are increasingly open to engaging with AI chatbots for holiday planning.” He mentions a spike of 4 to 5 times in the use of Genie (GiftList’s virtual shop assistant) compared to last holiday season.

Generative AI, such as ChatGPT and chatbots on retailer websites, can assist with personalized gift suggestions for your family, complete with purchase links.

“Instead of starting from scratch, parents can utilize AI as a brainstorming partner,” explains Jaklitsch. “You provide details about your child, budget, and available toys, and receive a tailored list of gift ideas. This is so much more efficient than sifting through generic ‘Top 100 Toys’ lists.”

AI also benefits bargain hunters like me, who prefer to shop efficiently without juggling dozens of tabs.

“Parents lead busy lives and shop frequently,” Rincon adds. “These features allow parents to find what they need quickly and free up their time for what truly matters. Who doesn’t appreciate scoring a great deal?”

AI assists savvy shoppers in four significant ways.

Unique Gift Recommendations

Unsure what gift to get for your nephew this year? No worries.

AI gifting platforms like Giftruly excel at curating holiday gift ideas based on your child’s preferences. Some, like GiftList, offer chatbots that provide suggestions complete with product links and prices to create shareable lists for family and friends.

Plus, many retailers have chatbots available, such as Amazon’s Rufus. If you’re unsure about your child’s Minecraft obsession, AI will likely be well-versed in it.

Discover Great Deals

With many families feeling the financial strain this season, we all seek cost-saving strategies without disappointing our kids. A recent study found that 61% of parents would prefer to go into debt than let their kids down during Christmas.

AI can help locate bargains through downloadable price-tracking browser extensions, allowing us to shop normally while AI-powered assistants like Coupert and Karma apply coupons, find better prices, and alert you when prices drop.

Similarly, Microsoft Shopping, built into Microsoft Edge, assists users in monitoring prices over time, comparing products, and applying discounts at checkout. It also offers intelligent suggestions for alternative items and highlights better deals.

Budgeting and expense tracker apps, such as Rolly, also leverage automation and AI insights to help us better understand our spending habits.

Shopping Assistance

This year, Gemini, Google’s advanced AI model and chatbot, has introduced new tools that could very well belong in a sci-fi movie.

These features include conversational shopping experiences through Google Search’s AI Mode (which offers inspiration and details in a friendly manner), agented checkouts (allowing Google to track prices with participating merchants and handle payments), and AI calling (where Google reaches out to stores based on your search).

Channeling Cher’s digital wardrobe from “Clueless,” Google now also boasts virtual try-on technology that gives shoppers the ability to digitally try on countless clothing items. Perhaps it’s your turn to treat yourself this season.

Snap and Spend

If you see something appealing while out and about, you can take a photo, and platforms like Google, Amazon, and eBay will find similar or matching products available for purchase. This proves especially useful if your child admires a friend’s toy or if you spot clothing you love but don’t know where to get it.

This feature, though previously introduced, continues to simplify the shopping process for potential gifts your family will adore.

Maximizing Your AI Holiday Shopping Experience

As more online stores implement chatbots, knowing how to utilize them can be a great advantage. This skill can differentiate between receiving generic results and a personalized shopping experience. Jaklitsch suggests using descriptive prompts, mirroring the type of conversation you’d engage in within a physical store.

Instead of asking, “gift ideas for my 10-year-old son,” try something more specific like, “gift ideas for my 10-year-old son who loves soccer, graphic novels, and building things. My budget is $25–$60, and we live in a small house; he already owns a Nintendo Switch and a soccer ball.”

Remember Offline Rituals Too

While AI can undoubtedly lighten the load during the holiday season, it’s crucial not to over-rely on technology.

Meg Leta Jones JD, PhD, a professor at Georgetown University, cautions that excessive use of AI can erode important holiday connections.

“The holidays are about family traditions and togetherness,” she emphasizes. “While delegating administrative tasks to AI can be helpful, if it means forgoing personal conversations with your mom or a friend, it’s worth re-evaluating whether these tools are genuinely enhancing the holiday spirit.”

As the online shopping season progresses, maintaining a balance is essential. By recognizing that AI won’t provide all our festive solutions, we might just create a more relaxed and enjoyable holiday experience for the entire family. That is undoubtedly a gift worth cherishing.
